Jaka Galing by Asmaraman Kho Ping Ho (English Translation) Book 1-1

After hearing the order from Adipati (Duke) Gendrosakti delivered by the five deputy official, Panembahan Ciptaning's expressed his willingness and invited all five of them to wait briefly and enjoy a simple meal, a hot tea with boiled sweet potato and coconut sugar.

Having traveled so far and exhausted, the five attendees have come to this meal with great spirit and consider it a great fortune. The Panembahan Ciptaning (Worshiper Ciptaning) then pardon himself from his guest to pack and say goodbye to the people inside the house. He heads to the "Sanggar Pamujan" (a small cottage for prying) to the right of the house, a place where he and his son pry and Samadhi (meditate).

Panembahan was already an old man, with his white beard and white hair washed, his hands and feet cleaned, he entered a small hut. He wants to give offering to "Yang Maha Tunggal" (The One God) and pray for the strength to face the events he is about to experience. Soon, from the outside, a young man was running and come closer.

With a gleam of his sharp eyes, the young man gazed at five of the attendants who were sitting down for a drink in the front room, and without hesitation he ran inside. The five attendants looked at him in amazement. They did not think that there was young boy like that in that place.

His unclothed torso body was bare-skinned with a pale yellow skin, a pair of arms that looked strong and agile while his face was very handsome and reflected the majesty of his character.

The wide, clear eyes were covered with long, curved eyelashes, the small nose with straight bones and around the nostrils, the lips resembling a drum and a healthy red, while the sharp-pointed chin in the middle with a strong pull indicated that he had a will strong and strong and strong faith. A pair of ears are wide and beautifully shaped, a sign of his virtuous nature. But at that moment, the boy seemed to curl his brow as if he were worried about something.

"Gosh, what a good young man!" exclaimed one of the servants as he watched a pair of strong feet enter the house. The black pants were covered with linen.

"Who is this brave knight?" asked the second, looking at the head of hair wrapped in a dark blue headband.

"Probably the student of the Priest (Panembahan Ciptaning) ..." another whispered. Meanwhile, the mesmerizing person who had been the target discussion of the five official's eyes immediately stepped in and swiftly made his way to the Sanggar Pamujan. He removed the bow that had been fastened to his right shoulder and released a bag of arrows hanging from his back.

He hurriedly washed his feet and hands, then climbed the ladder. He saw the middle-aged grandfather sitting cross-legged, concentrate in silence on his meditation. For a moment the young man stared at the head of Panembahan Ciptaning, his eyes shining with admiration and amazement.

It is true that when people see that old priest is in a trance, they will be amazed and honored. The priest's body is thin but his skin is not shiny, nor is he pale, even the skin of his skin is bright red. His bare chest moved slowly and steadily as he breathed. His breathing was long and free-flowing just like expert and wise human do.

His right arm was extended to the navel and his left arm rested on his right shoulder. Both legs rested cross legged on top of his thighs. Close lips close to smile, eyes half closed with a view to the tip of the nose. It was as if hot air was shining out of his body and flickering on his head.

The young man then worshiped and suddenly Ciptaning's eyes opened his eyes, as if the young man act pull him back from the still world.
"My son Galing, you've been back?"
"Yes, Father, because there is bad news that Uncle Suto told me."

The old wise man calmly asked, "Which news, my son?"

"While aiming for a deer with my arrow, suddenly  uncle Suto came and shouted until the deer was startled and ran into the bushes. Then Uncle Suto called out that Rama Bagawan (father Bagawan) has guest from Kadipaten (the duke's office) and that Rama was called in front of him! is that right, Rama? "

The Begawan Ciptaning nod with a heartwarming smile. "Ahh, hot-blooded young man. That's true, but can it be called bad news? It is not a big deal if a man like the Duke of Gendrosakti, who rules over the whole Wanagading area, is calling for his subject citizen to come before him."

"But, Rama, the reflection I saw in that night's dream ...." Jody Galing's voice was heard hesitating and anxious.

The Bagawan take a deep breath and speak with serious voice when he said, "My good son, the Most Merciful always gives his servants an foretold and a sign about what might happen, but only those who are alert can catch and understand that foretold. Know, my son, that the All-powerful is all-powerful, the power to give and take, the power to build and to overthrow. We as human beings only live, our duty to choose, is the best way to get rid of your doubts and anxieties, which will only drag you into the abyss of inner weakness and diminish your fortitude and strength."

Jaka Galing worships respectfully. "Sorry, Father. Indeed, my heart was covered with great anxiety driven by angger. But after hearing Rama's advice, my heart calmed down again, though frankly my heart would not feel good leaving my father to go to the duke. In my dream last night, I saw my father. dressed in white and fluttering about the air, this is not a good foretold. After all, I heard the rumor that the duke was on sadness and sorrow, not clear on what his sadness on."

Now Bagawan Ciptaning is smiling again. "My son, we do not need to hide it anymore. We know that such a dream usually means death. But do you still think that death is a bad thing to worry about? the nature of our death is unavoidable, as with birth. How can a human being prevent his own birth? Nor can he prevent death, something that every human being in the world will experience. "

At that moment the sound of a call was heard outside the worship hall. "Respected elder! Please get ready and let's go now since the sun has risen!" that's the official voice.

"Alright, dude, I'm coming down," replied Bagawan Ciptaning.

The priest elder stand up and took his long robe from the trunk and put it on his thin body. "Father Bagawan!" Jaling Galing embraced the priest's feet.

Bagawan Ciptaning bent down and caressed the teenager's hair. "Galing, remember. There is no eternal meeting in the world and no eternal farewell. All of us will eventually become one. Act as knights in all things that happen. Do not follow the wild passions without control. Use common sense and your conscience, always watch the whisper of your pure soul. "

"Rama, I'm coming with you, father. Let me protect you on my way to the duchy."

"No, my son. The duke just called for your rama, and you have to be here to lead, the farmer working the fields. Be careful of the fields, it's rainy season and if the dike breaks, it's a pity for our peasant friends. My son, your father go. "

"Goodbye, Father Bagawan."

"Goodbye, the Almighty will always bless you!"

The elder priest went down the stairs followed by Jaka Galing. The young man felt a whisper in his heart that made him unwilling to see his father leave. But his father forbade him to come and didn't dare to go against his father's wishes.

The Ciptaning was then greeted by the palanquin provided by the noblemen, but with a smile the priest declined. When he was pleased to ride a horse he also refused. Seeing the hustle and bustle, Jaka Galing stepped forward and spoke to them.

"Father-in-law doesn't need to be confused. Father Panembahan never tortured people to carrying him by sitting on the palanquin nor did he like to ride horses. But you don't have to worry. Just lace your horses as fast as you can with the direction of Kadipaten, Rama Panembahan wouldn't left behind by you!"

Hearing the words, the officials looked at each other and laughed, as they thought the young man was boasting. But, to their surprise, the priest spoke in a gentle voice. "Get down, get on your horse. Let me just walk."

"But we will be late and the duke will be angry to us if we come too late. By horseback, we will only get there after the sun goes down, especially if we walk, maybe until tomorrow we have still not arrived!"

"Get on your horse and run as fast as I can, I will go first" said the priest.

When the five noble men acted they were still hesitant and much fussy. Jaka Galing used his palms to clench their horses' thighs. The horses jumped and buckled, and they quickly jumped forward without being held back by their riders. Jaka Galing laughed loudly at them, and Panembahan Ciptaning just smiled.

This old priest then men use his magic and his body is quickly chasing after the horse. For the last time, Jaka Galing knelt down to worship his father. For a long time the young man sat leaning in front of his hut, and was just standing when he was approached by Suto.

"Respected Jaka Galing, your father has already gone, let's go back in to the residence." Jaka Galing is like waking up from a dream. He looked at the faithful old servant's face and said, "Uncle Suto, today I will pry and meditate in Sanggar Pamujan to ask the Almighty's blessing for Father Panembahan. I will not go out until tomorrow morning, do not disturb me."

The young man got up and entered the small hut in peace. Mr. Suto shakes his head. He secretly adores a very devoted and love his parent. He himself had put his trust in the priest and knew how mighty he is, he doesn't have even just a slight of worries.

Five noblemen on duty to escort Panembahan Ciptaning became furious when their horse suddenly ran away because of the boy's hit on the back of their horses. They try to hold back and calm their horses, but these horses share the madness and rush forward until they are forced to admit defeat. They are swearing and directed their horse to the duke's office.

Suddenly they heard a gentle and powerful voice, "Officials, don't swear and curse the horse. If you keep cursing, you will surely be thrown down!"

Hearing this sound, they were surprised and stared. Apparently behind them they saw the Panembahan Ciptaning walking easily with a stick in his hand. Even though the feet of the clergyman were moving slowly, they were as fast as they could walk, but they were not lost on horseback! Seeing this strange situation, four of the noble men immediately stopped cursing on their horses.

But one of them, the youngest, ignored the warning from Begawan Ciptaning, and even spoke louder with profanity. Suddenly the horse rattled and stood on both legs, the beast shaking his body so hard that the man could not held it anymore and was thrown from the horse's back! Fortunately he was thrown over thick bushes without breaking a bone, and suffered only skin injuries.

Not long after, Panembahan Ciptaning says.

"You guys ride the horse carefully. I want to go first." They saw a white shadow flashing and the old priest had disappeared from their sight! It's no wonder they saw this miracle. They quickly helped their friend who had been thrown by the horse. He was moaning in pain, but now he doesn't dare to curse anymore!
********************

Adipati (The Duke) Gendrosakti was a duke who ruled the area of the duchy of Tandes and was well-known as a man of honor, as he was once a General of the King Brawijaya in the majestic kingdom of Majapahit. Because of his great role in conquering the Blambangan Kingdom a few years ago, he was made a duke and served in the duchy of Tandes, and was married to a beautiful royal court lady named Cahyaningsih, the daughter of Brawijaya's royal concubine.

Ever since Duke Gendrosakti ruled in tandem, the area has been prosperous and peaceful. The peasants worked hard because apart from getting directions from the duchy owners who were in charge of it, the field tax was not too heavy. The fishermen also work with great joy and the fish they produce so much that they can be shipped elsewhere, even to the island.

But it is true that ancient scholars said,  that everything that standstill on the face of the earth does not exist. Whereas such oceans are exposed to high and low tides, such air is hot and cold. Furthermore, mere human beings, that are helpless creatures against the will of the Great God.

The wheels of government, which were spinning smoothly under the leadership of Duke Gendrosakti, suddenly had to succumb to the fate that had come to them. This has happened since Duke Gendrosakti took a new concubine in addition to his fourteen concubines. At first the Duke loved the Goddess Cahyaningsih and did not care for the concubines, but since his beloved wife gave birth to a daughter, somehow, the nature of the Duke Gendrosakti changed and his concubines increased. Her latest concubine is a notable ledek (dancer) for her beauty and her dancing skills and her beautiful voice. Her name is Sariti, originally from Surabaya.

And since he took her as his concubine and brought her to the duchy, the Duke of Gendosakti has begun to neglect and rarely leaves the duchy to check the situation of his people in the village as he used to.

Every day he was having fun with his new concubine and almost every night he heard the sound of gamelan played by the yaga (gamelan player) from the hall center, a sign that the duke was having fun. From the outside of the duchy, soft sound of Sariti's voice echoed, seducing and making the duke sink deeper.

One night, Duke Gendrosakti dreamed of seeing a small fire burning in his house. Over time the flames grew until his home became a lake of fire and was consumed. He screamed for help and realized from his dream with a sweaty face and a restless heart. The next day, he called his advisor and ordered them to call the wise men all over the duchy.

When they arrived, the Duke of Gendrasakti told him what he had dreamed of and asked them what his dream meant. The counselors were staring at each other and none of them could solve the meaning of that strange dream. Some of them realize that such dreams have a bad meaning, so they don't dare to explain them in front of Gendrosakti, and feel safer by shutting their mouths and pretending they don't know what they mean.

"All of you, my uncle, are the one who is considered to be the smartest in the Tandes Duchy. But why you are not capable of breaking the meaning of such a simple dream?" said the Duke of Gendrasakti angry.

The oldest advisor considered to be the most intelligent, named Bagawan Sidik Permani, take both hand in front of his face, worshiping,  and said. "The noble duchess lord. In my humble opinion the dream is a flower of the sleep. A dream signifies that he sleeps well and deserves it. From this lowly opinion duchy doesn't need to be confused and depressed by dream that doesn't have any meaning."

"Uncle Bagawan, it was impossible for my dream that night to be meaningless. I can also distinguish an empty dream from a dream that has meaning. My bad that I don't have the relevant awareness, and more so for you all, that given the awareness but can't even use it properly."

Bagawan Sidik Permani answered respectfuly, "Sorry, Lord Duke, if the Lord wanted to know the meaning of the dream, then in all of Tandas Duchy there would be only one person who could explain it."

Duke Gendrosakti's face become brighter and his anger subsided. "Uncle Bagawan, who is the capable men?" he asked.

"Who else would it be if not Uncle Panembahan Ciptaning from the Tiban Village."

A solitary priest that secluded himself in that village. He was aware of the sacredness and mightiness of the Panembahan Ciptaning, because during his tenure as a general in Majapahit, Panembahan Ciptaning also served King of Brawijaya and was his beloved advisor.

At that time the name Panembahan Ciptaning was still known as Empu Ciptaning. Hearing the explanation from Bagawan Sidik Permani, the heart of Duke Gendrosakti became very excited and sent five young men official to go to the village of Tiban and call on the old man.
